From Central America to North America
From the rocks in our backyard
Brown, sharp, bumpy and rough
I am from the dirt soft and moist
I am from angry tension in the air
From Mum and Dad
I am from the dark and light
From hand me downs to designer
I am from “ get out of bed!” To “ stop messing around.”
From roasted turkey to chocolate lava cake
I am from sea urchins
Sharp, and prickly
I’m from poems—
pages white but flimsy
Holding me to the tips
of human fingertips
