an ode to our place

Only a few moments we are granted

Before this night comes to a desolate end.

For now, darkness envelopes us in its embrace

And a sea of stars spread endlessly across the sky.

How lucky we were to discover this expanse of nothingness

A haven hidden from the demons that wait for us to stumble.

Silence greets us like an old friend

Erasing the fear of being discovered.

We are insignificant, tiny, easily replaced

Here we feel divine, as if we were gods.

We speak words that feel sacred, whispered to one another in the wind

This field transformed into a place of confession.

A breeze ruffles our hair, tugging at the soft strands,

Cold seeps its way into our bones, clawing through skin.

Blankets turn damp atop the grass below, no barrier thick enough to deter it,

Yet still we stay, soft music lulling us into a dreamlike state.

The ground thaws slowly as we lay side by side,

An imprint left behind the only evidence of our rebellion.

The sky gently turns the colour of a robin's egg,

Around us the Earth begins to awaken.

We were shadows, concealed by the veil of night,

But our freedom is a sunset, transient and fleeting.

Back to our prisons we must go,

A memory is all that's left, forever engraved into the ground below.

For the boy that held me together when I was too broken to do it by myself
