water fountain
Neither hot nor cold,
Not refreshing or weary,
The coldest thing in that school was the people,
The people I had to spend every day with,
Listening to them talk about me behind my back,
All I wanted was cold water, and I got lukewarm.
The water was cold for one year, crisp and healing,
Then it got warmer as my friends became foes,
The water no longer helped that big empty feeling.

I had a bad experience in middle school, and our water fountain was notoriously lukewarm, so I thought the metaphor of lukewarm water and "friends" would be cool.
