On My Own

Her bruised feet slowly carry her,

as far away as they could.

Her dainty arms tightly hug her cold body.

It’s nearly midnight.

The wind rustling through the leaves,

goosebumps rising on her skin.

The distant sound of crickets chirping

and the contact between the sidewalk and her feet.

She slowly passed by the one streetlight,

the one that if you look closely,

has faint and sharp carvings embedded.

Their initials centered in a small heart.

Her finger drags along the writing,

reminiscing every memory together.

The better times.

He made her feel alive.

He was her home.

Now, she walks alone

with the stars gleaming in the night sky

as they accompany her home.

The author's comments:

This poem I wrote reflects back from my walk home after my now, ex-boyfriend and I had broken up. The entire relationship had taken a toll on me mentally and had damaged my perception of love for the longest time.

The universe must be a teenage girl. So much darkness, so many stars.<br /> --me

That's so sad, I can feel the isolation and loneliness in these lines. May God bless you and grant you healing.
