Two birds on the same tree,

The fledgling dusts off piano keys.

The older one hears through the walls and joins in,

Back bowed, bowing a violin.

They play for a while,

Never seeing the other’s smile.

Till the winter wind’s lonely howls.

The other bird bows

For the applause one last time.

Their melody ends on death toll’s chime.

The first bird strikes the first notes and vainly waits,

For an aged partner whose crooked back breaks.

One bird in an apartment complex.

A bloody feather on a bed of ice by its steps.
