When The Sun Rises
The sun barely begins to rise on the horizon.
Dewdrops slide down the hanging leaves,
Joining together to form a puddle in the grass.
Birds hum their morning song
While a cool breeze flows by.
Just as the sun begins to peek out from the clouds,
The city lights flicker on.
The loud ringing of alarm clocks pierces the air.
People bustle in the streets,
While children start their school day.
In a few hours, the sun reaches its zenith.
The bell chimes, signaling the end of a school day.
Innocent laughter fills the air
As students file out of schools
And parents arrive to take them home.
The sun’s path curves down to the west.
Employees get off work and start their journey home.
Families gather at the dinner table.
But in some houses, one dines alone,
Attempting to ignore the empty space.
As the sun sets on the horizon
It is rapidly replaced by the moon.
Lights flicker off as incessant minds are finally laid to rest.
The city goes quiet, making the chirping of crickets echo,
Until, once again, the sun rises on the horizon…
