Round, robin blue ceramic bowl

glistens ever so slightly in the light

of the slow setting summer sun.

These fruits are smaller than usual

this year, starved of nutrients

from the long lasting winter

they grew up in. They vary in tone.

Purples, greens, yellows

shine out of every pore.

A select few have long,

healthy stems. Their leaves are shy

and hug themselves. Even though

they grew up when the world was dead

and iced over, they now soak up

the warmth of the sun’s rays

and appreciate every moment

of sun they can see

before their time here ends.
