Parched Lips and Pop Music
Find me -
lying in the hard dry dirt
tall grasses covering my head
and scratching at my skin
find the gnats seeking food on
my body
and mosquitos thirsty for
my blood
this is summer -
parched lips and chewed nails
sickly sweet taste of sweat
everywhere
a radio blasting pop music
out a bedroom window into the street
bare, calloused feet and dirty hands
the drowning noise of 6 box fans
used to try and forget
that it is an attic with no AC in
ninety degree heat
Watermelon juice dripping down a chin
Sunflower seeds cover
a sidewalk chalk art drawing
the dust covering someone's legs and hands and hair
I will be 15 in less than a week
and I think the summer will kill me.
I will die happy.
