Self Checkout
Even if it is the only one open
I’ll still be reluctant
I long for human connection
Not a camera recording of my own face
I don’t want the plastic bags
I can’t use the paper ones here
I like the whirring of the conveyor belt
I like unloading my cart
I like to stare at the packs of gum while I wait
I’ve never bought one
“Go ahead and insert your card”
Happy that it’s a real voice
I blame the smiles of people at the grocery store
The people that aren’t happy but have to work
I blame the inescapable fear of inconvenience
But I still don’t use the self checkout

I hate using the self checkout at grocery stores because of how strange it is.
