things i didn't say but i probably should have
I.
excited,
happy and jumping
three pairs of feet and
three bullseyes in a row
Be careful,
laughter
or that'll be you.
You laughed too,
then.
If those were real axes,
I might take that threat seriously.
I just laughed,
too delirious to correct you.
it wasn't a threat,
it was a promise.
II.
My ribcage is unraveling and
I need your arms,
like a stitch,
cinched,
pulling me back together
I am so,
so
selfish.
I know this will kill us both
But please, please
If you gave me another try
I promise this time I'd make it good
I'd do the right thing the second time around.
My ribcage is unraveling
and I am left with these
patchwork lungs
III.
I was Apollo
and you, Icarus
I loved you, I did
the way that your wings caught the wind
and that smile as you soared higher
But darling,
the sun is not for mortals to touch
No matter how lonely it was in the sky.
IV.
Forever and always
I promised and
I cannot deliver
I said that we could still be friends
but this doesn't seem like friends to me
Your address in my google maps
Another set of streets with ghosts
Always
that
lingering
I'll question
never
learn my
lesson
You know too much about me
those blue eyes see right through me
I've got to leave this town tonight
I swear these ghosts will eat me alive
Blue yarn in my pocket,
the loss is dead,
I dropped it.
