Life in Print
My feet ache and my knees toil
A low hum radiates from the motor
A complete stranger captivating my eyes, fixing my gaze
I am staring directly into a mirror
The boy does not resemble my features or visage
Yet I look at him and see myself, his soul lay bare
The sun is beaming down with no remorse
Horrified to lose the fleeting glimpse of myself I called out to him
His peering glance only matched by his words
Some lost language rolls off his tongue like sweat bulging from my skin
The air is dry and my eyes sting
We stare at each other blankly with solace
The boy does not flinch at the howling, dusty winds
I remember the handbook I found on the plane
The lone word I can muster up is brother
The boy winces
At the sight of his clearly restrained sorrow I instinctively lunge for my pocket
A priceless photograph peels as my shorts rustle faintly
The now long worn smile has almost been chipped away
Stains cover up years of pain buried deep within the crusty print
Though we have never met before the boy is familiar
Not taking a snapshot would be a waste of life
The boy meets my brother through loose change and linen
They know each other well
We are one in the same
