Dog Among Wolves
I’m a lot like my mother
As much as I wish not to be
Like a dog in a zoo
Stuck in the wolves’ enclosure
Not quite out of place
Not quite fitting in
And I’ll always wonder what freedom would be like
But when I was young she taught me people don’t change
Someone who can’t love themselves will never love another
As people walk past the enclosure
They realize the “wolf” shouldn’t be there
As much as I wish to be taken home
I could never love the people who chose to save me
I learned from the best
You can’t trust anyone but yourself
So I isolate myself from the pack
No matter how many times they welcome me in
In my rage fueled loneliness
I’ve given up on begging the zoo keepers to let me out
And I’ve never forgiven my mother for leading me in here
But at least I’m not the only dog among the wolves
