the jump
sometimes, the brink of needing closure
collapses right through your heart
and into the air,
some would call it flying
until it’s not
for how do you prepare
when the world rearranges itself
and leaves you falling towards something
you’re still not quite ready for
like flying,
you must act as if you’re above it all
as if the scar never burned when acid rain consumed the gash whole
as if the air never got thicker
as you were forced to ascend
but like falling, these things
slowly eat away at the remaining flesh on your bones
and still somehow make it feel
bearable
or at least
tolerable
because you’re still at the precipice,
looking downward–
steadying yourself for the drop
but for some reason you feel oddly calm
something like closure
something like control
and as you say your goodbyes, those little
last wishes
you realize
it really is just flying
until it’s not

Hey! I'm Kimberly, a tenth grader from New York City!
This poem, the jump, is about regaining control from something or someone that has been making you feel helpless, incapable and finally being able to turn that into something thats just enough for you. It's about standing over that emotional precipice that's been hanging you over the edge far too long, it's about making that choice to let go for once--to ignore the hate and cruelty of the world. It's about finding that closure once doing so and being able to call that, 'flying,' instead of 'falling.'
I do understand that this piece could be interpreted as suicidal or anything pertaining to death or jumping off cliffs but I think with this poem I try to convey the idea of control and regaining power within yourself which is not what suicide is at all. Thanks for understanding!
