You Can't Fight Fate
I remember the day like it was yesterday,
Leaving me with my thoughts in disarray.
I promised to never let myself fall,
And save myself from heartache and all.
But some things just can’t be helped.
It didn’t take long,
Before I was proven wrong.
If I had only followed my initial intuition,
I would never be in this position.
I guess words have a way of empowering the head.
Promises were broken,
Words lost that were once so soft-spoken.
It was all too good to be true,
His name rolls off my tongue like poison, a dangerous taboo.
It really was a fantastic fairytale,
Until his ship set sail –
I wish I could take it back.
It’s been months but I still can’t let go,
A past lover, not a friend but foe.
Months with a permanent smile that stayed,
I wished, dreamed and prayed it would never fade.
It was amazing,
All of those nights spent star-gazing,
But that wasn’t enough.
Left to serve his nation,
I cried out in desperation.
He was my navy boy,
My life, my pride, my joy.
If timing was right,
Then things would have been alright,
But you can’t fight fate.
When I close my eyes to sleep at night,
I’m brought back to his sight,
His soft stroke,
And the words he once spoke.
I miss it more than words can explain.
