"That's why I write, because life never works except in retrospect. You can't control life, at least you can control your version." - Chuck Palahniuk

"Goodbye, my love," you said to me,
as we drank our poison by the sea.
Our lips embrace for one last time;
as the cyanide fills our starcrossed eyes.

"What if I never feel your touch again?"
"Don't worry sweetheart, for we'll long be dead -
your eyes are like starlight, your skin like the moon,
they had it out for us, our time ends so soon."

My heart begins to sing and my veins start to swell -
"We must be destined, destined to hell."
"Oh, no, not yet - for the deed has yet to be done -
Our sins are not accounted for, not a single one."

My mind grows heavy as I look to the sky,
I think and I ponder, and let out a sigh.
"Goodbye, goodbye, I'm free at last -
Away from the world, away from my past."

The shoreline disappears as the tide rolls in,
The last drip of death enters our skin.
The golden girl and the golden boy are no more -
For we our martyrs, and have won this war.

The author's comments:
I've never been good at making things rhyme - always sounds to sing-song, and lessens the severity. I wrote this off the top of my head, just in the moment, and I think if you could find the deeper meaning between the words it actually is a nice piece.
