Lost Soldier, Lost Love
She watched the sun set
Off on the horizon
as the torn up earth
Was shoveled into the gap
Which held the body
Of her long lost love
Who returned to her
After all these years
Of endless anxiety
And silent tears.
Shipped off to war
With little more than a gun
He fought alongside others
For her freedom and safety
And eventually paid
The ultimate price
Of the ancient evil of man
While being shot down
On the bloody field
Clutching her picture
To his heart.
