All I have is this box
nothing but this box
my sister and brother
are on their own
Everyone for themselves
because I’m hungry
Only one set of dirty clothes
but it’s nothing
you don’t get used to
like pigeons
pecking at nothing on the sidewalk
If that’s what it is
soup is water
and there is no water to drink
danger is everywhere
there is
nowhere
to hide
but in my box
I like to cry

The author's comments:
In my class we were given an image and we were supposed to write a poem about it. Mine was probably a little camp, more like wasteland, in Iraq and there was a little fire with a worn out box. Next to it were 2 scrawny kids :(
