May 5th
I’ve watched the hours die out today,
Fading out against the sky,
I’ve measured every single step,
More than my mind can count.
The sun has passed into the west,
Drowned in its fiery flame,
And sorrow beats inside my chest,
But the moon will rise again.
Tonight the stars will dare not shine,
For his’ will blind their blaze,
Tonight we’ll walk into the dark
But he will light our way.
A path of shadows leads into my bed,
And silence fills men’s hearts,
Yet we will kneel to floor and pray,
And mourn him as he parts.
The cell is cold and hard tonight,
And sleep will not obscure,
Outside the lights begin to ignite
But the voices still endure.
The window sheds a saddened light,
Today this fifth of May,
We hear them cry against the night,
That Bobby Sands is dead.
