I'm waiting for the day I can take off this collar
Of perfect pearls
I'm waiting for the day I can get a job
Not a nurse, not a teacher
For an identity other than
Wife
I'm waiting for the day my husband comes home
Fixes me a glass of whiskey
Asks me about my day
And listens
I'm waiting for the end of casseroles
Knitting needles and skirts
Cherry pies cooling on the windowsill
Smiling
I'm waiting for the day I can not worry
About what the neighbors will think
For the day I can be the one
Making the cat calls
The one golfing on Sundays
The one with a life
I'm waiting to be the master of the house
For independence, respect
Liberation
I'm waiting for the day I can take off this collar
Of perfect pearls
