Escaping
I clutch
a pair of my favorite heels
as I run
through the puddles
who lay
beneath my feet.
Tears
streak my face,
leaving smudges
of mascara
on my flushed cheeks.
My dress is torn
and my hair is tangled,
but I keep on running.
I don't know where I am
or where I'm going,
all I know
is that I have to get out
and leave the people,
who were once
all part of my life,
behind.
The thoughts
running through my head
block out
the harsh noises
of the storm.
I try
to concentrate
on the sound of the rain
to push the memories away,
but they just keep bouncing back.
I let go of my heels,
that I'd held onto
for so long,
and let them fall
to cold ground
allowing them
to take my past
and bury it with them
in the cold,
dark
mud.
