You're Carrying an Intruder
We passed by a sign that was unfamiliar
to me
and I hoped maybe we were somewhere else
then I felt the air
was still frigid and I realized
we were still here.
The hills were dark in a sunless sky
oh how that changes one’s view
when you are dreaming of a place
with yellow mountains and sunny skies.
A ghost train drove by
carrying invisible cargo that slowed it down anyway
and soon I could tell another car was creeping up behind us
when I saw headlights getting brighter
and brighter.
Then they passed and it was dark
again
and up in the front seat
all the hair fell from your head
and you picked it up and pooled it in your hands
and I refused to take it
when you offered.
Between us,
nothing was the same anymore.
You told me to find a star to follow whenever it was dark
I chose the brightest one
but it got away from me
and I got lost.
Turns out it was just a plane
and stars aren’t really that bright.
