when you walk away,
i count every step.
so that when you leave for real,
i can say i saw it coming.
when i need you most
i shut you out
so that when you leave for real,
i can live without.
when i yearn for you so badly
i cry and hope it pushes you away
so that when you leave for real,
that connection isn't there.
when i tell you i love you,
i say it with the slightest regret
so when you leave for real,
i can say i never meant it.
when i lie to you and to myself
it's just a futile attempt
to keep it from hurting so much
when you leave for real...
