If I Told

If I told I had cancer
I could tell everyone in school
Without any fear
There would be races
T-shirts, bake sales
Guess how many bandanna’s are in the jar
A deadly
Horrible disease
But I would have support
If I told I had an eating disorder
I would be mocked
You can’t do that
I would be shunned
Just like the plague
Pushed away
A freak
A weirdo

I AGREE. People absolutely do not understand. Eating disorders have higher death rates than some forms of cancer.

The message is very true. I had never thought about it like that. Many people would never understand unless they have been there though. They often think it's just a phase or for attention. They don't realize how, just like a physical disease, it affects your every day life as well as those around you and can even kill you. It's more real and painfull than many people will ever realize. For many people it is their life and it's NOT a choice or preference. It's a mental illness.
