Masquerade
Her mask gives her control,
 her dress, fantasy,
 her prince, hope

 The mask hides everything:
 the dark circles,
 blank, sunken eyes,
 the hollowed cheeks

The dress gives an image of beauty.
 One without tubes,
 and catheters,
 medication,
 bruises

 And her prince holds her.
 Her hand,
 her waist,
 her heart.
 And soon
he will be all that is holding her together,
 at midnight
When her makeup turns to monitors,
 her mask protective,
her dress to a hospital gown,
 and just he remains.
 The only one who knows
that it was all a masquerade
