Check Yes or No
Unfold the edges of the note,
your familiar handwriting fills the page.
Flashback to when we were younger.
Recess,
swinging a rope along to our song,
laughing in the sunlight.
Sitting in the grass
playing handclaps as we pass the time.
Running,
chase me,
fall to the ground in innocent fits of laughter.
Fighting through the door to get back to class first.
You sat in your desk,
right beside mine.
Making faces at each other,
giggling as the teacher put the alphabet across the board.
You take out a marker and a piece of paper,
grin at me
then start to write.
You fold up the little paper into a square,
and slide it across to my desk.
"Will you be my best friend?
Check yes or no."
I feel a smile spread across my face,
check a box and slide it back.
As you read the answer,
you smile, too.
"Best friends forever" you whisper.
As I read,
deja vu strikes me as a smile crosses my face.
"Will you marry me?
Check yes or no."
I check a box,
slide it back across the table.
You read the answer and smile,
"Together forever" you whisper.
