Construction Site
the shadows of the tree’s hands
stretch out across the blazing sand.
 blocking the sunlight
 from my face
 and my cheerful attitude
 displaced.

 hiking through
 this desert now
 I have often
 wondered how
 all life here
 does not burn away.

 this ancient tree,
 a shriveled oak,
 is all that’s left
 of an ocean of trees.

I stand in a graveyard of leaves.
