King and Pawn
We play in the park,
on the cement chess boards.
The children play tag,
Check.
You’re it.
I start every game,
Moving the bishop, pawn,
and knight,
so that I can cross the rook
over the king.
Castling.
I always get stuck.
He would take over,
playing two sides at once.
All the while explaining,
every move.
I listen
to understand better.
The Pawn protects
even if it is weak.
The King
is protected,
by the
pawn.
But the pawn
isn’t always there.
Checkmate.
