Pulled Over
The flashing lights and siren
alert me to pull over.
Hands glued to the wheel,
the policeman approaches my window.
License and registration
are all he asks for
but I’m afraid he’ll return with them
a ticket with a handsome fine.
I soon learn, though, that he is gracious;
he lets me off with a warning.
But at the last moment
I open my mouth
and the words that come out
change his disposition.
“Thank you, ma’am- I mean…”
is all I have time to say.
Defensive driving isn’t so bad.
