“The moment you think you understand a great work of art, it's dead for you.”
~Oscar Wilde
I must lie down where all the ladders start
In the foul rag and bone shop of the heart.
~William Butler Yeats

My world breaks down into dust
As I kiss happy memories goodbye
It was you who I always could trust,
Now the river of faith has run dry.

I’m blinking as tears flood my eyes
And pour onto cold tile floor
No, it didn’t come as a surprise
When you said you don’t want me anymore.

Love took me, with teases and taunts
For a moment my gaunt heart was freed
You said I was all you could want
But I know that it’s me you don’t need

I’m sorry that I cannot stand
The pain from the wound I can’t undo
Stabbed in the heart by my own hands
Truth is that I’ll always need you.

This is a poem I wrote last year after a breakup. Although we agreed to stay friends, it didn't happen. Writing is how I get my emotions out, and then I revisit the drafts later and tweak them a little.
