What happens to a hope abandoned?

Does it cry cozying up
Like a blanket fireside?
Or pester like ivy--
And then hide?
Does it shrink like spry quicksand?
Or grow and bubble over--
Like warm bread, tanned?

Maybe it just distracts
Like a paint splatter.

Or does it shatter?

Emulating the style of Langston Hughes' Harlem, this poem explores what happens when one abandon's their hope or dream.
