Where We Stand

the only easy day was yesterday.

We are so foreign to each other
Brand new, shining eyes.
Brilliant blue mixes with green
In which pale pink songs of roses can be heard.
When we breathe,
We inhale each other and exhale US.
We trespass the lines marked strictly by dad's threatening words
And mom's clenched hands around a kitchen towel.
Every night, just as the stars were stretching from their day naps and preparing to peek through twinkling, thick curtains of darkness,
You would drive me home.
Kiss me on the forehead.
Watched until I was safely inside, back pressed against the door, smiling.

You led me to believe.
You led me to heart skipping beats against steamy windows where honest to god, we were wearing clothes but were stripped of emotion.
We scattered our smiles and souls across picnic hills, parks, hidden school makeout spots, the oak tree where you first met me.
You had me at hello.
And will hold me till goodbye.
