Brother
You never knocked down my blocks
Never told me lies
Never stole things in my room
A perfect brother, some might say
Keeping out of a young girl’s way.
Never looked me in the eye,
or made silly plans of vengence
When I hated our parents.
You never did.
Never told me you loved me,
Replaced those words with a near-silent
Scum, scum, scum
that whistled through your lips
My joy, my music, my laughter,
Feared.
My friends,
Hated.
My soul,
Hated.
An obstacle from parents’ love
Forever my role
In my brother’s eyes.
