Flat Line
I was waiting
Just waiting
My father’s chest moved up and down
The movement no longer a steady rhythm
My mother came into the dimly lit room
Sighing as she saw my tears
Both shed and unshed
She took my hand and squeezed it
She looked at me and tearfully said;
“Nothing ever dies,
Bodies may run out of energy
But their souls will always remain
On earth, with those who were dear to them.
As long as you remember him,
He’ll never truly be gone.”
She and I glanced up at the monitor
A flat line greeted our eyes
My father my be dead, but he will never be gone
