Chasing the Dragon
You told me I was beautiful
running your fingers across my hand
struck in awe for how much I've grown
I couldn't find myself to meet your gaze
You asked me questions relating to my current life
I answered dolefully
for you had not remembered my age
but you hadn't wished me a happy birthday in years
I stared at the lifeless soul residing in your body
Where had you gone
I'd never know for certain
You told me I was wonderful
we shared similar interests
but that could have just been genetics
You were dying this was clear
I couldn't save you
Although I never tried
You chased the demon night and day
you followed him to hell
You said you loved me
I never said it back
I know you loved me
but the devil held you deep
Every child has a mother
some more nurturing than others
all with different intentions, all with struggling battles
you chased the dragon
I could not win your love in the end
