Ode to "The Awakening"
Eyes flutter open
Eyelids heavy, lashes long
The world is revealed
It is not beautiful.
Hands reach out, forcing
The eyes shut again
Malicious hands and kind ones
And the eyes’ own reach back
Lids flit open and closed, back
And forth like the tide
Waves of realization sweeping in
Sweeping us out to sea with them.
Clothes shed, bonds broken
Chains shattered and fallen
Frightening independence
And the chance to realize
You don’t know yourself.
