Falling
It rained this morning,
but not where I was.
I saw the rain fall around you.
A star fell this morning,
but not where I was.
I saw it fall towards you.
Who are you?
Who are you, that rain and stars
pick you to be near?
Who are you,
that the rain
chooses to chatter
with the pavement around your feet?
Who are you,
that you talk the gossip
of the hosts of stars in heaven,
no matter how fallen they may be?
Who are you?
Perhaps a frightening question
for you to answer
and for me to hear,
but I cannot fall in love with you
until I know the answer,
and I cannot be happy
until I fall in love with you.
I would that I were the rain or the stars
that I might fall near you.
But instead I can only watch
the starshine
gleaming through the glorious rainy mist around you.
