Faith Like a Child
She wraps her tiny hand around my thumb
as tears run down my face.
Her green eyes ask so many questions
that I just can't answer.
Not now.
She climbs in to my lap,
her tongue not yet able to form words.
I stroke her hair
as she lays against me.
Innocent.
My mind wanders,
thinking about all she has ahead of her.
Boys to fill or break her heart,
friends to heal or stab her.
Pain.
The tears keep falling
as I wonder who she will become.
A kindhearted girl,
or a heart breaking woman?
I pray.
Lord protect her as she grows,
guard her heart
and make her strong.
Don't let her fall
like me.
But her glowing eyes hold no fear
as she listens to me whisper.
She knows God's presense
and feels his love
better than I.
Her innocence comforts me,
and I know that He will guide her,
no matter what life brings her way.
As long as she keeps faith
like a child:
unquestioned.
