Me and You
I didn’t just appear from nowhere.
I didn’t fall out of the sky
And drop into your empty lap
Like a rejected, despondent UFO
I wasn’t formed from nothing.
No, I had a clear beginning.
I am deeply rooted inside of you.
Everything I am is what you are.
Everything you want to say is
What you put inside of me.
Every time you felt worthless
Or helpless or forgotten,
Every time you felt overjoyed
Or euphoric or grateful,
Every time you felt confident
Or beautiful or fearless,
You put those feelings into me.
When you felt the loyalty
Of your best friend
Shining on you like sunlight
And you knew that she would
Always be there beside you,
That happiness became a part of me.
When he smiled at you
And said, “You look pretty tonight”,
Yes, my stomach was doing somersaults, too.
When your heart broke and ruptured
And bled all over the table
As loud, woeful tears spilled down your face,
My heart shattered along with you.
You tell me everything I need to know.
And in return, I comfort you.
I uplift you and sacrifice myself
So that you might feel better.
We’re best friends forever,
Fused together like Siamese twins.
Inseparable; always there for each other.
I say a lot of significant things.
I have an important, never-ending
Story that I have to tell.
But I’m just a piece of writing,
And I’d be absolutely nothing without you.
