Forsaken
On a cold winter day
On the eve of a storm
I returned to my horse.
His limitless form
His effortless grace
Then caused me to wonder
Why I left to a place
Where his hoof never trod:
How did I forsake
The ineffable sod
Where the fall of his steps
Beat a song on my heart?
But my thoughts—so inept
to redeem my mistake—
Fell useless when he
Tore the rope from my grasp
—and with it the flesh—
and ran from my side.
