I Beg of You
Whiskey and Cigars-
The scent I couldn’t bare.
Loud old country music-
I pleaded for it to stop.
Snake skin hats-
I hid my face in shame.
He was a mortification to all things norm.
“How old are you now?”
His huskily voice would question.
He couldn’t remember the years.
He collected all things insignificant,
And he kept it all in his garage.
He would speed gravely down the road.
His temper was a short fuse,
And he was always right-
Even when he was wrong.
And then his heart forgot a beat.
His body was the prey of the beast.
They promised us the worst,
They stamped an expiration date on his feet.
Past his date to depart and he smiled.
He held on to stay for us.
He kiss my head and said he loved me.
I really thought he would last.
Midnight came- Midnight left
The dancing line fell still.
I couldn’t feel any more-
But I felt everything.
Bagpipes acquainted me with reality,
It brought me to shame.
How could I feel mortified,
By someone I loved too much?
And today I crave his snake skin hats.
I need the humming of the old country songs in my ear.
But beyond all memories of him that fade away,
I really need his scent of whiskey and cigars.
And I really need them to stay.
