"We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are---
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. "

Tennyson

Once upon a time I knew a musician.
His hands were strong when they played, and consumed his audience when he had them in his grasp.
His eyes were full of happiness, and his smile could silence the darkest kind of evil.
He lives on the sidewalk; finding amusement in the grass that grows through the cracks in the cement.

Once upon a time I knew a business man.
He worshiped his two girls, and surrendered everything he had to a better cause.
His face rugged and hansom, his eyes grey like storm clouds before a summer rain.
He waits in line for his ration of food, and brushes his babies’ hair with dirt stained fingers.

Once upon a time I knew a little boy.
His hair was blond like beach sand that is eroded time after time by the ocean.
His voice is calm but courteous, and can lull even the most timid of animals to rest.
He sits on his daddy’s shoulders, asking him if that red white and blue cape could keep them warm from the bitter wind.

Once upon a time I knew a nation.
It kept people safe, and offered hope and love to all who desired it.
It was a symbol of strength, honor, and loyalty.
It sits in silence, while the ones who formed its name are forgotten.
