Don't Ask the Dictionary
Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary
Would say that you are
‘One attached to me by affection or esteem’.
You are much more than that.
That sounds so formal.
But a true friend,
A lets-you-cry-on-the-phone,
Picks-you-up-when-you-fall friend . . .
There is nothing formal about that.
That’s about as personal and
Emotional as anything.
Another definition said:
“A favored companion.”
Well that’s too simple.
A favored companion could be anything!
That could mean my cat is my friend,
Or my cell phone is my friend.
You are more than an entity
I enjoy having around.
I don’t tolerate you because
You’re all I have.
You are a person I can believe in.
You are beautiful.
I hope you know that.
I know all about your dreams.
When we grow up,
I hope you reach them all.
We may not be friends then,
But I hope you think back
And know that you were more to me
Than a person I was attached to by esteem.
