Balloon
Blow me up like a balloon
Just to watch me diffuse
Like what’s the use?
Dropped me empty on the ground with the string still attached
My flimsy powerless rubber surface stomped and smashed
By crowds fans and bystanders
And friends and family members
Seeing what I once was
Full, bright, soaring above
Held in hand now waving bye in the wind
My airless surface scuffed
Next to worms and dirt and garbage bags stuffed
With half-eaten apples and pears
And ticket-stub pairs, greeting cards,
And the mem’ries of two beating hearts.
But I’ll be fine.
Picked up again, stretched and expanded
Lips pursed to mine
Breathing life back into me
Feeding me
Holding me
Above.
