What have I done?
Was there anymore I could do to save her?
Doctor said there wasn’t,
But somewhere in the back of my head,
Thought that he was lying.

I remember her body as she laid there limp.
The car was just coming too fast, it was my fault.
Just like my favorite song,
“We wait for the end to change.
But we’re making the same mistakes.”

Doctors saying “take a little time off,
Go home. Today’s been rough.”
Aimlessly walking the streets of New York,
This late at night,
Lead me to a coffee shop.

Look at that couple.
Wonder what they’re doing out late on this fine night.
I remember when I used to be like them.
Being happy, feeling safe, not one bit lonely.
Look where my mistakes have gotten me.

The waiter noticed my glum feeling
And asked what’s going on,
I told him straight through without a tear,
From the early evening
To that last moment of fear.

Surely the man sent his condolences,
But it doesn’t cushion this mistake.
He said there was nothing I could do for goodness sake.
But somewhere in the back of my head,
Thought that he was lying.
