Sisters
The sun
Burned my skin,
In hot, unwelcome kisses, and
Warm dirt
Stuck between my toes
As I ran
Through strawberry fields.
You, ahead of me,
Always leading and, Mae,
Our old Collie,
Running behind me.
I stopped to
Pluck a strawberry
Off the vine
With clumsy little fingers,
Feeling it burst in my mouth.
We dreamed of escaping
To a tree house but
Instead lingered beneath
A puzzle of boards and nails.
We sat
In the cool shade
While petting the dog
And eating strawberries.
