Stepping Out
It’s dark.
 The skeletons tell me stories.
 I sometimes visit Narnia.

 It’s dark.
 Clothes hang limp.
The skeletons’ sordid tales dry up.

 It’s dark.
My legs are starting to cramp.
 I want out.

 It’s dark.
 I’m leaving today.
 I’m scared, maybe another day.

 I’m in the light.
I sense the skeletons and the ones trapped in Narnia.
A closet is no place for humans.

 It’s dark.
 My stomach is in knots.
I try not to trip on my way out.

 I see light.
 I force myself towards it.
I breathe in my freedom for the first time.
