A Retrospective
Like an angel just sitting there,
Without a care in the world,
Watching my family with endless love.
With my hair in a ponytail,
And a pretty dress on, I am a princess,
Adorned in makeup, awaiting a prince.
My parents, in the other room, are talking about the world;
How the economy is failing and the politics are crazy.
But my sister, on the other side of the lens,
Makes me giggle, and I forget everything.
I’m in my own fantasy, princess life.
In my head I hum a Raffi tune,
“Baby Balooga in the deep blue sea...”
And I jump up and model-walk down the hallway.
To be a movie star is my dream, and with that photograph,
I’ll get to Hollywood!
Without knowing what my future holds,
I just flash my best cute act,
And the whole room lights up.
When I make my family smile through the camera,
I become joyous:
I’m the luckiest kindergartener in the world.
