For December, and What Came Before
I remember December
And how your strong fingers
Danced so lightly across the white piano keys
As the falling snowflakes kept time
And in December and what came before,
We took walks in the woods
And your footprints were never far from mine
In December
We played cards by the fire
For hours on end
And laughed until we cried
But now it’s January
And the piano is silent
And the fire died
But here’s to December and what came before
The day of the fight and the slamming doors
Now your hearts still whole, but mine is torn
And I miss December, and what came before
