Hurricane Sandy
Sitting at home rejoicing
Over an unexpected seven days of not a care in the world,
A week off from school, an eternity away from stress;
Failing to realize the devastation that's been felt,
the havoc that's been wrought,
the life that's been lost
just a few miles over yonder river.
Tuning into the news,
Listening to the reports of a city battered like never before,
Listening to the stories of people who perished under nature's vicious pummeling,
Listening to the survivors' accounts
and hearing them grieve.
How lucky we are
to have all of our bearings
while our poor neighbors
have lost everything
and are left to salvage nothing.
Such are the unfortunate commonalities
of nature's unrelenting wrath.
