Breaking Free
A dab of mascara to elongate the lashes
Hide away the shortcomings
Some eyeliner to enhance what’s present
Draw eyes away from the flaws
And perhaps some lip gloss
That adds a sparkle to that smile
Cover up the longing behind
Maybe some concealer for the blemishes begone
A layer over what’s true to the heart
What power has there for the heart?
The outside is what they see
And what matters
But one day
The mascara crumbles away
The eyeliner washed off by the tears
The lip gloss shines no more
The concealer gone with a splash of water
And I stand alone
Stripped to the core
As the outside breaks apart
Watching the walls chip
The ceiling fall
For the inside, the heart
Is suffocating
And it pushes vehemently
Slowly seeping out
From the wounds and the cracks
The outside tries to lock the cage
But the heart persists
The struggle begins
And it’s starting now
Breaking free
While I was caught up
With my dolly persona
